Orpheus, the son of Apollo, fell in love with Eurydice, a wood nymph. They got married and had were happy until Eurydice was bitten by a snake and died. Orpheus was so grief-stricken that he traveled to the underworld to try to bring Eurydice back. Persephone convinced Hades to return Eurydice to the living, but was warned that while they traveled back to the overworld he could not look back at her. But he did and Eurydic was lost to him forever.
